The International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA) is pleased to announce that it will award its second Annual WiFTy (wine, food, travel writing) scholarship to a writer who aspires to enter the field of food, wine and/or travel writing and who is not already a writer in any of those fields and earned over $500 from those fields in 2009.
In order to qualify for the scholarship, you must meet at least one of the following conditions:
- You are a new writer who has not been published anywhere;
- You are a writer who has been published but not in the genres of food, wine, or travel writing;
- You are a writer who has been published, but earned less than $500, from writing about food, wine, or travel.
This award would not be possible without the support of our sponsors shown at the end of the guidelines. They deserve a large thank you for supporting this endeavor. Application link is at the end of post.
The scholarship will consist of:
- Complimentary attendance at the 2011 IFWTWA’s Conference at Sea, with full access to all Professional Development Sessions and one mentoring session with a senior IFWTWA member.
- A one-year membership in IFWTWA;
- A one-year subscription to Press Pass, IFWTWA’s newsletter, which contains industry news leads on markets, story ideas and press trips;
- The opportunity to publish at least one article in Global Writes, IFWTWA’s online magazine.
We will also have two Finalist awards, which include:
- One-year membership to IFWTWA
- At least one article in Global Writes
- One-year subscription to Press Pass.
When you submit, keep the following in mind. Judging will be based on the following:
- Presentation includes grammar, punctuation, writing style, general appearance. This is worth a maximum of 50 points; judge may award any number of points from 0 to 50.
- Resume is worth 50 points; judge may award any number from 0 to 50.
- Letter stating why the contestant should be awarded the scholarship is worth 100 points; judge may award any number from 0 to 100.
- Writing sample (2,500 words maximum) on wine, food, travel or any combination of the three, either published or unpublished and is worth 100 points; judge may award any number from 0 to 100.
The rules are simple:
- Entrants must be 21 or older.
- The entry fee is $15. This can be paid with credit card through Google.
- One entry per person; duplicate entries will result in disqualification.
- Entrants will register online by filling out a simple form which includes name, address, contact information and age.
- Entrants will upload:
- Resume,
- Statement of why they should be awarded the scholarship,
- Sample of their writing on wine, food, travel or any combination of the three, either published or unpublished. If published, please provide the URL. If unpublished or a scanned clip, please upload where indicated.
- Entries that are not complete will be automatically disqualified.
The competition closes on May 31, 2010; all entries will be electronic and must be received by 11:59 P.M. The winner will be chosen by the IFWTWA Board of Directors and notified by September 30, 2010.
An announcement of the results will be made both in Press Pass and on the IFWTWA website, as well as TravMedia.com, Tripatini, Travel4Press, Linkedin, Facebrook, Twitter, and other social networking sites.
