Ghost Ranch – Home of Georgia O'Keeffe

Three IFWTWA journalists participated in the natural beauty that is Ghost Ranch.

Five IFWTWA journalists participated in celebrating all that makes Taos so special.

The serene and rugged landscape of Ghost Ranch, home to Georgia O’Keeffe, provided the perfect place to relax and contemplate after a busy conference schedule. Several hikes around this rugged land engulfed the group in the same awe-inspired environment as Georgia O’Keeffe. The Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology delighted our writers with the actual dinosaur bones found on the ranch.

Our journalists were able to see for their very own eyes all that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. Attendees heard intriguing stories of the history of the area—stories of dinosaurs, Navajos, cattle wrestlers, and famous guests like Ansel Adams, Charles Lindbergh, and John Wayne.

IFWTWA thanks our host for coordinating our stay.

Ghost Ranch Hikes in Georgia O’Keeffe’s Footsteps

Ghost Ranch got to me and it had nothing to do with spirits. My heart shook in the presence of towering rock formations, the light illuminating Box Canyon, and across the Piedre Lumbre Basin the shadowy overseer, Pedernal Mountain. Ghost Ranch hikes flooded me with a quiet awe that made it hard to leave. The magnetism of being outdoors here was undeniable. Good thing that there’s multitude of Ghost Ranch hikes and other trail systems in the area. The Ranch is a comfortable and perfect base for experiencing the inspiring landscape.

Touching on Texas and New Mexico

Ghost Ranch Mountain
View of mountain on Ghost Ranch @ 2019 Kathleen Walls

When I came close to Ghost Ranch, I lost a lot of time. That was because the view kept causing me to slow down and take pictures. A mountain that looked like a camel, ones that appeared as chimneys jutting over a rugged castle, all colors of a rainbow woven into the sides of cliffs, all these and more caused my camera finger to get itchy.

Tracking Georgia O’Keeffe

Few American artists have made as big an impression on the average American as Georgia O’Keeffe. She has been called the “Mother of American modernism.” Although her paintings of New York skyscrapers and huge flowers are well known, she is mostly remembered for her abstractions on beautiful landscapes, mostly in New Mexico. Several spots in New Mexico are beautiful memorials to her.
