Port Chicago Weekend:

Port Chicago Weekend is a highlight of this trip. Here you can connect with one of American history’s most significant yet often overlooked stories. During this trip, you will attend Port Chicago Weekend, held annually in mid-July to honor the Black American sailors who served at Port Chicago Naval Magazine during World War II.

Last year marked the inaugural Port Chicago Weekend, produced by the Port Chicago Alliance, commemorating the site of the worst homefront disaster of WWII — an explosion that killed 320 sailors, the majority of them young Black men. The tragedy and its aftermath became a pivotal civil rights moment. When 50 surviving sailors protested unsafe and segregated working conditions, they were charged with mutiny in what became the largest naval mutiny trial in U.S. history. Their courage helped spark the desegregation of the U.S. Navy and laid the groundwork for the broader civil rights movement.

As last year’s commemorations approached, the Navy made history again, officially exonerating the sailors wrongfully convicted over 75 years ago. This long-overdue act brought national attention and profound meaning to the weekend’s events.

Visit Concord was proud to take part in this moving and historic celebration. With the next Port Chicago Weekend set for July 17–19, 2025, the story continues.

The National Park Service and East Bay Regional Park District are working together to create a future visitor center at the nearby Thurgood Marshall Regional Park—ensuring that the legacy of Port Chicago is preserved, taught, and honored for generations to come.
